I’ve been writing about the future of the digital library, specifically the digital library as a teaching tool, since 2015. I’ve taught digital library courses for over 5 years at colleges and universities around the country, including UC Berkeley’s Department of Information Studies and the University of California, Davis’ Center for Digital Learning. The most interesting part of my work as an expert is when I get asked questions about the future of the digital library. The answers to these questions are always in the same order. First is whether or not the digital library will be a public library or not. Second is whether or not we should focus on the content or the services. Third is whether or not we should focus on the physical or digital format of the library.
The answer to the first question is, “No.” But the answer to the second question is, “Yes, because the digital library is a public resource and everyone is entitled to use it.” The answer to the third question is, “Yes, because the digital library should be free and accessible to everyone.
The only difference between the first and third questions is that they are not tied directly to your story. The more you don’t know about your story, the less you’ll know about what happens on this screen for free.
The first question is tied directly to your story. The second question is tied directly to your story. The third question is tied directly to your story.
If you don’t know your story, you don’t know anything about it. And if you don’t have a story, you won’t know how to write it. If you have a story, you may know all the characters, but they are fictional characters.
I’m not gonna lie to you. We never know how to write a story. But we know we must.
That’s probably the biggest problem right there. We can’t write a story about a fictional character until we know that character. That’s a pretty big deal. It’s not like we can just say, “Oh, this is our story.” We have to know our characters. But until we know, we can’t write our story. I mean, think about it. Suppose you’re a person who’s got a family. Your parents die in a car accident.
